Am I Making Progress in Therapy? – What Growth Really Looks Like
May 27, 2025
Almost every client asks it at some point — sometimes out loud, sometimes silently on the drive home: “Am I actually getting better?”
It’s an honest question. You invest time, money, and emotional energy in therapy — and you want to know it’s working. But progress in therapy rarely looks like what we expect. It’s not a straight line from pain to peace. It’s more like waves — forward, back, pause, reflect, repeat.
At Renewed Life Therapy, we often remind clients that healing doesn’t always feel good. Sometimes progress looks like exhaustion after a breakthrough, or finally crying over something you’ve numbed for years.
Therapy works in layers. In the beginning, it’s easy to track — you start noticing your triggers, setting boundaries, or naming emotions. But as you go deeper, the changes become more subtle and internal. You might notice you’re no longer reacting the same way, but it still feels unfamiliar.
You might feel emotionally heavier before you feel lighter — that’s because awareness always comes before relief. It’s like physical therapy: you strengthen muscles you didn’t know were weak. At first, it hurts more. But that discomfort is a sign that healing is happening beneath the surface.
Even when it doesn’t feel like it, growth often shows up in small, meaningful ways:
Therapy doesn’t make life painless — it makes you more able to meet life as it is.
Many clients worry they’re not healing fast enough or as well as others. But your healing pace is personal — it depends on what you’ve lived, what you’re ready to face, and what safety feels like for you. Comparing your journey to someone else’s is like comparing chapters in two different books. The goal isn’t speed; it’s sustainability.
Sometimes feeling “stuck” isn’t regression — it’s integration. It’s your mind taking time to absorb new insights before moving forward again. If you’re unsure, bring it up with your therapist. Therapy is a collaboration — and conversations about progress often open doors to new focus, clarity, and motivation.
There’s no shame in saying, “I’m not sure if I’m getting anywhere.” It’s an act of courage and self-awareness — two signs of growth in themselves.
At Renewed Life Therapy, we believe progress isn’t measured by perfection — it’s measured by self-awareness, emotional safety, and your ability to return to yourself with compassion.
